Punakha Dzong, also known as the “Palace of Great Happiness,” is a stunning fortress-monastery situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in Bhutan. Built in 1637-38 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it has been a key political and spiritual center in Bhutan’s history. The dzong served as the administrative seat of the government until the mid-1950s and has hosted significant events like royal coronations and weddings.
The architectural beauty of Punakha Dzong is characterized by its towering white-washed walls, intricate woodwork, and vibrant murals depicting Buddhist teachings. The dzong is accessible via a cantilever bridge and is surrounded by blooming jacaranda trees in spring. It remains a central venue for the annual Punakha Tshechu festival, drawing visitors from far and wide.
